In 2024, the Department of Education’s workforce stood at 4,133 workers. Now in 2025, cuts leave the Education Department’s workforce at roughly 2,183 workers. A looming bill to completely abolish the Education Department leaves its future in question.
The stated mission of the Education Department is to “promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access for students of all ages.”
The Education Department said in a press release that as of March of 2025, the Education Department would continue to deliver on all statutory programs that fall under the agency’s purview, including formula funding, student loans, Pell Grants, funding for special needs students, and competitive grant making.
